Project Outline

Wenlock Works is an office development in Shoreditch, London N1. Located in close proximity to the Silicon Roundabout the area has fast become the epicentre for digital leaders and synonymous with London’s vibrant tech scene.

The project represents a comprehensive refurbishment under the design direction of Buckley Gray Yeoman Architects. The scheme cleverly reinterprets the warehouses of Hoxton’s industrial heyday with innovative material use to transform an existing 6 storey commercial office block with the addition of 2 floors and an external terrace to provide 140,000 sq. ft. of office space.

Stortford Interiors and our in-house joinery division Parkrose were appointed by Main Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to design, deliver and install a broad architectural package that fused new materials with old to provide a quality, fit, finish and aesthetic that was appropriate to the fabric of the building and its occupants.

Scope of Works

Stortford Interiors were appointed to deliver a broad and expansive architectural package to reception, field, lift lobby, washrooms, shower and common areas. The scope included thermal performance linings and air tightness membranes to perimeter structures, shaftwall risers and drywall cores. Field areas received MF monolithic membranes and bespoke mesh ceilings rafts with integrated lighting. Proprietary fire rated glazed screens to all lift lobbies were part of the Stortford remit as well as polished plaster elevations to high profile reception spaces.

A comprehensive joinery package was also included within the appointment with bespoke Douglas Fir cladding to stair cores and reception areas finished in Class O lacquer. European Oak veneered timber door sets were installed throughout with unobtrusive bespoke pivot hinges on riser doors. Skirtings, window boards and stair strings formed part of the general joinery scope and complemented by a bespoke timber clad louvre screens and a reception desk incorporating GRC to retain the architects brutalist industrial feel.

A full super-loo, DDA washroom and basement shower area fit-out concluded the wide scope that captured wall and floor tiling, FF&E, bespoke lockers, vanity units and benching. Stortford Interiors in- house tiling business, Arcade Tiling Limited, also delivered striking handmade blue crackle glazed brick bond tiling to stair core elevations with lift lobby frontages receiving white glazed tiling.

This broad scope provided a number of design and procurement challenges that included manufacturer assessments of atypical detailing and the sourcing and procurement of materials to satisfy the projects stringent BREAAM requirements. Our in-house design managed interface detailing peerlessly and arrived at a bespoke mesh ceiling design that achieved the desired industrial look whilst maintaining its functionality and accessibility requirements.

Close client engagement and commitment to providing the best solution manifested itself in another class leading delivery.
