We’re proud to share a significant milestone in our sustainability journey: Stortford Interiors is now officially Net Carbonzero certified, and our science-based emissions reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
As part of our commitment to tackling climate change and reducing the environmental impact of construction in the UK, we’ve taken decisive steps to measure, manage and reduce our carbon footprint across our operations.
Why We Took Action
With the construction sector contributing over 10 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions in the UK between 2023 and 2024, we recognised the urgent need to lead by example. We committed to the SBTi to make our efforts measurable and transparent. Our approved target is to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 58.8% by 2034, using 2023 as our base year. We’ve also committed to measure and reduce our defined Scope 3 emissions.
How We’re Making a Difference
We’ve already made meaningful changes within our business to cut emissions, including:
- Switching to cleaner imported energy sources across our offices and hubs
- Launching our first solar project at our Mock-Up Hub to generate clean on-site energy
- Encouraging the use of electric vehicles, including through a salary sacrifice scheme
- Making smarter, more sustainable procurement decisions, including sourcing from local suppliers
- Partnering with supply chain collaborators who also prioritise low-carbon solutions
To track our progress, we carry out annual carbon audits using data drawn from our integrated Xpedeon software system — covering procurement, travel, commuting and operations. Our data is independently audited by Achilles to ensure accuracy and credibility.
Certified Net Carbonzero
Alongside our SBTi target approval, we’ve also been certified as a Net Carbonzero organisation under ISO 14064-1:2018. This means we’ve not only measured and reduced emissions, but we’ve also neutralised the remaining unavoidable emissions by retiring verified carbon credits through trusted partners, including Achilles and Redshaw Advisors.
Business travel and team commuting have been the largest contributors to our footprint, so we’ve focused on low-carbon mobility, internal awareness and supporting long-term behaviour change.
Looking Ahead
We know this is just the beginning. Our certification is valid until 2027 and will be maintained through ongoing annual audits, enhanced data collection, and deeper Scope 3 analysis. We’re committed to continuous improvement and are excited to identify even more opportunities to lower our impact in the years ahead.
By being proactive and accountable in our approach to sustainability, we aim to build trust with our clients, empower our team, and contribute to a lower-carbon construction industry.
Thank you to everyone across the business and in our supply chain who helped us reach this point — especially our Executive team, our accounts department, and our partners at Achilles.
We look forward to sharing more updates as we progress further along our sustainability journey.
